As we were staying in the Netherlands we really wanted to see some windmills – so we did a day trip to Zaanse Schans.

The Zaanse Schans is a heritage area where lots of old windmills have been transported and rebuilt. There are also lots of craft shops and museums.

We began by visiting the museum which had loads of interactive exhibits and was all about the history of biscuits and chocolate.

We then visited the cheese factory where you could see how cheese used to be made. There was also a huge shop selling lots of different varieties.

We had a wander round the windmills and went inside one which was using its power to cut timber. We also walked around all the old houses and visited a clog factory.

We ended the day by going back to the cheese shop and buying some cheese to bring home as gifts.
