We had planned on stopping at some State Parks on our drive from Austin to San Antonio but we woke up to a torrential rain storm so decided to head straight there. The weather in San Antonio was looking quite nice but a storm was due the next day so we thought we would arrive early and explore the city before the storm arrived.
The River Walk
We arrived mid-morning, parked up and headed straight to the riverwalk – a city park in the center of San Antonio.

The Riverwalk, San Antonio
We were determined to sample some Tex-mex food on the road trip and as the river walk was full of restaurants we thought it would be the perfect place. We found a restaurant – Casa Rio – and it had lots of tables set up along the river. We ordered a sharing plate of fajitas and they were really good.

Lunch on the River Walk
The Alamo
After lunch we headed into town to visit the Alamo – a spanish mission church dating back to 1755 and the site of the Battle of the Alamo in 1836. We wandered around the grounds but did not go inside as there was a huge queue.

We then headed back to the car as wanted to check into our AirBnb.

Walking back to the car through San Antonio
Natural Bridge Caverns
We woke up and as predicted by the weather forecast – the storm had arrived. It was pouring with rain and there was thunder and lightning. As we had already done the riverwalk and the Alamo we decided to visit the Natural Bridge Caverns – especially as they were underground! It is the largest cavern in Texas and was discovered by cavers in 1960.
The caves were good and were full of stalagmites & stalactites – they were also really big. However, as we have done quite a few cave tours they were very similar to what we have already seen – but it was the perfect way to spend a rainy day in Texas!

More cave pictures!
We headed home for the afternoon – stopping off at a Dairy Queen on route – as Tom had some GCSE revision to do.
