Houston Texas – 2 days visiting Kemah and the Space Centre

We had two full days in Houston so day 1 we planned to visit Kemah Boardwalk as thought Tom & Izzy would love the rides and day 2 we were off to Nasa Space Centre.

Kemah Boardwalk

Kemah Boardwalk is an amusement park on the coast full of rides and restaurants. We arrived for opening as had no idea how busy it would be and on entering bought Tom & Izzy wristbands so that they could go on as many rides as they wanted.

We went for a short walk along the seafront and then watched the kids enjoy the rides.

There were lots of restaurants to chose from for lunch but Saltgrass Steakhouse caught our eye. We had seen one in San Antonio so thought it was definitely worth a visit. We had steaks and the food was really good – although the restaurant was very quiet.

The kids went on a few more rides before we headed home for the evening – with Stu & I both being a little bit sunburnt!

Space Centre Houston

Our final day in Houston was spent at the space center. We had all previously visited Kennedy Space Centre in Florida and Stu had visited the center at Houston on a work trip a few years prior. We really enjoyed the exhibits as you entered the complex – it felt more informative than Kennedy – although we loved it there too!

We then took a tram tour where we saw the astronaut training facility, Mission Control and the rocket park where there is a Saturn V rocket.

The astronaut training facility – we walked along a balcony overlooking the room.

When we came out of the Saturn V building we were next to a field which had Texas Longhorn cows in which we though was really cool. We had a quick lunch at the exhibit center (I had a pulled pork bun with coleslaw which was very good) and then took our tour to Mission control.

Mission Control

We really enjoyed our day at the space center – and we preferred it to Florida. We headed home as the following day we had to drive back to Austin for our flight home.

When we arrived in Austin we found a BBQ smokehouse for lunch. When we went in the restaurant let us try all the meats before we chose our order – I went for brisket, texas toast with mac & cheese. Best BBQ we have ever had.
