Houston, Texas – Driving from San Antonio to Houston and visiting the Painted Churches.

The final stop on our road-trip was Houston and we had a three hour drive from San Antonio to get there. I googled ‘things to do’ on the way and came across the painted churches of Texas. These churches were built by early immigrant settlers to Texas (from Germany, Austria and Czech) and although they may look mundane from the outside – their interiors are beautifully painted. Many of these churches were near a town called Schulenburg which was about half way on our route – so we headed there!

We parked up at Schulenburg and went for a short walk. The town looked really cool – there was an old dance hall and a lovely water tower – I love the American water towers!

We didn’t stay long as we wanted to head off to our first church – Nativity of Mary, Blessed Virgin Catholic Church. From the outside it was a red brick church but inside it was beautifully decorated. We were quite surprised that the church was open and you could just walk inside!

Our next church was Saints Cyril and Methodius Catholic Church. It was a white church but the inside was painted in blue with beautiful stars on the ceiling.

Unfortunately we ran out of time and could not visit any more churches – I believe there are about 20 of them and would love to go back and see some more!

We continued our drive to Houston – passing a field full of zebras(!!!?) and came across a Buc-ees service station. We had heard about them and wanted to visit one – it was really impressive! The service station was huge and there was a giant Buc-ee walking around! I paid Izzy to have her photo taken with him (she was acting too cool and didn’t want to – Tom just refused!) We didn’t buy any of the food – in hindsight I wish we had!

Buc-ees!

We finally arrived in Houston and checked in to our AirBnb for the next few nights.
