Rhodes, Greece – a Day Exploring Rhodes Old Town

After a beach day at St Paul’s Bay we were looking forward to exploring Rhodes Old Town. We arrived just after 9am as we wanted to get there before the crowds and beat the heat! We parked up near to the harbour and immediately saw the deer sculptures which mark the entrance to the harbour and stand on the site which is thought to have been once occupied by the statue of the sun god Helius. We then walked along one of the harbour walls past the three windmills which date back to the 14th century.

We then headed through St Paul’s gate (where we were accosted by someone trying to put a bracelet on Stu so that he would have to pay for it – they didn’t manage!) and had a wander along the marina before making our way into the town.

Selfies at the marina.

The town was very quiet and the restaurants were just beginning to open up. We found the town square where there was a random parrot sitting on a perch and decided to just wander along some of the old cobbled pathways.

Not sure why there was a parrot?!

By the time it was lunchtime we had seen all we wanted to and it was starting to get very busy. We liked Rhodes but I think we all preferred Chania Old Town in Crete which we had visited the previous year. We did not want to find a restaurant for lunch so decided to do a quick pitstop at Starbucks which meant I could buy my ‘Rhodes’ mug and head home for lunch and spend the afternoon in the pool!

Pool time and the peacocks came back to visit!
