After a brilliant day in Sheffield we were looking forward to visiting the Peak District on our way home back to Gloucester. None of us had ever been to the Peak District before. We opted to explore Derwent Reservoir as it was not too far of a detour as opposed to some of the other locations in the Peaks. After a lovely breakfast at the hotel we checked out and arrived at the reservoir for 10am. It was very quiet for a Sunday morning but it was very grey out and trying to rain.
We followed the trail out of the carpark and it wasn’t far before we reached Derwent Dam. The Dam was completed in 1916 and was needed to supply water to the industrial cities of South Yorkshire and East Midlands. It was also used by the ‘Dam Busters’ in World War 2 to practice low level flying.

Arriving at Derwent Dam
We climbed the staircase to the right of the dam and then went for a walk along the reservoir.

After 15 minutes or so we decided to turn back as we were quite concerned that the rain was on its way and we did not want a three hour drive back to Gloucester in wet clothes! I think we we will definitely be doing some more exploring in the Peak District – especially as Tom is now based in Sheffield.
