Gower Peninsular, Wales (2 nights camping at Hillend)

I left Gloucester at 9.30am to head to Hillend Campsite on the Gower Peninsular in Wales. We had to leave early despite it only being 2.5 hours away as it was not possible to book a pitch so we needed to arrive before the campsite filled up. Stuart was joining us later and was going to drive directly from work at the end of the day. It was absolutely pouring with rain as we drove but we were hopeful that the weather would clear for the weekend.

We arrived just after lunch, selected a pitch and I put up the tent as the kids explored. There was a great play area for them which they loved.

We chose Hillend because it was next to Rhossili Bay so once we had some lunch we walked 100 meters through the sand dunes and were on the beach!

Arriving at Rhossili Bay

Unfortunately the weather was a bit grey but it didn’t stop Tom and Izzy from going for a paddle. We headed back to the campsite to organise tea. There was a brilliant shop selling lovely farm produce but as the weather wasn’t great we went to the café and ordered hot food to take out – I had a burger made with salt marsh lamb which was really good.

We then headed back to the beach. The light was absolutely stunning so I spent ages taking photographs as the kids played.

An evening on Rhossili

The next morning we woke up early, made bacon and eggs for breakfast then headed to Mewslade Bay which was a beach we had never visited before. We parked up and there was a 15-20 minute walk to reach the beach which was through a wooded area.

Once we arrived at the beach we had to scramble over a few rocks to reach the sandy area but it was worth it. The beach was lovely and because there was a bit of a walk to reach it, it was relatively quiet.

After an hour or so we headed back to the campsite via Worms Head so we could admire the view.

We then went back to Rhossili Bay for the afternoon so the kids could play in the sea. After a BBQ for tea we went back to the beach to play on the sand dunes and watch the sunset.
