Dubrovnik, Croatia – Boat trip to Lokrum

It was our last full day in Dubrovnik and we really wanted to go and visit one of the Islands. The easiest and quickest one to get to was Lokrum (a 15 minute ferry ride away). We packed our swimming stuff, made lunches and walked into Dubrovnik to catch the 10am ferry.

We were the first to board the ferry so chose our seats and spent the next 30 mins before we set off watching the fish swimming in the sea (they swam in shoals which I though was really cool) and locals sorting their boats out.

Waiting for the ship to sail

We sailed out of Dubrovnik admiring the city walls which we had walked 2 days ago and arrived on Lokrum at 10.15am

Arriving at Lokrum

Stuart wanted to climb up to Fort Royal for the views (to be honest the rest of us didn’t as it was so hot) but reluctantly we did. We walked through the Botanical Gardens admiring the peacocks which were roaming – eating our lunch as we walked (it was only 10.30am but my excuse was the sandwiches would heat up otherwise!!!) and headed up the hill to the Fort. Izzy and I decided to hill sprint the last part – Izzy won. The view from the top of the hill made the walk worth wile. There was also a fort which the kids played in.

We headed back down ready to spend the rest of the day swimming. I then realised I hadn’t looked whether there were any Geo-caches on Lokrum so checked to learn there was one up at the fort. We were not going to walk back up and find it!

Walking down from Fort Royal

The guides had suggested we go to The Dead Sea to swim but when we arrived we were a little disappointed that it was a small inland lake, so instead we headed to the beach.

To get into the sea we had to paddle through rocks and knowing I have a fear of crabs Tom decided to tell me he had seen a huge crab on one of the rocks. This freaked me out for quite a while, it wasn’t til we left he told me he had been joking!

We spent a good hour swimming and the fish were swimming past your feet. We noticed that a bit further round the coast was a small pier that people were jumping off. We headed over and the water at the end of the pier was really deep so we let the kids join in. They had such a good time jumping in then swimming back round and doing it all again. With Stu the whole time treading water at the bottom to Go-Pro their jumps.

Swimming time!

It was now early afternoon and we were quite tired so headed back to the harbour to catch the ferry back to Dubrovnik. I sat inside as wanted some shade but Tom wanted to stand at the front of the boat so Stu went with him (later joined by me and Izzy)

Sailing back to Dubrovnik

Each night from our balcony we had been watching a pirate ship which did sunset trips for groups. We had nicknamed it the ‘Party Boat’ and were quite excited to sail past it when going into port.

At the Port, the kids had ice cream and I bought an Orange Granita which was just frozen orange juice but so good. Yet again we spent our final evening in Dubrovnik watching the boats, planes and sunsets – although this time Stuart and I had a Sunset Photo Off. Not sure we will ever have a property with such a beautiful view again!
