Split, Croatia – The Diocletian’s Palace and Early Morning Cider

We were all tired from our long drive from Dubrovnik the previous day so decided to have a chilled morning and visit Split. We were staying in Podstrana (about 20 minutes away) so set off early to beat the traffic.

We parked at the train station by the Port and made the short walk to the Old Town. The town was lovely – cobbled streets, old buildings and little alleyways to explore. We saw some traditional Croatian Singers performing by the cathedral which was pretty cool.

Diocletian’s Palace

We knew there was a Geo-cache at the Cathedral so decided to find that first. It was hidden in one of the outside walls at the back of the Cathedral and we then spent about 15 minutes wandering around the alleyways and ended up at the fish market.

Fish Market

It seemed as if the fish market was winding down but there were lots of varieties of fish still available sitting out on the tables. Stu and Tom ventured inside one of the buildings and to Tom’s delight there were 2 huge swordfish on display!

We walked back towards the sea by which point it was 10am and realised that we had had enough exploring.

Neither Stu or myself are ones for spending hours in a city or town, but we also didn’t want to head home straight away. As we had seen so many little bakeries we decided to go and find some food. I had the most gorgeous pastry filled with chard and cheese (ricotta or feta). Stuart had a fruit pastry which again was delicious whilst both kids opted for chocolate pastries.

Izzy wanted apple juice. She chose her bottle, the lady behind the counter opened it and put a straw in it for her. It wasn’t till we were outside and Izzy tried it we realised she’d just been served a bottle of cider!!! She didn’t drink it!!!

Realising the apple juice was cider!

We walked back over to the Port to have a look. It is such a bustling Port with tourist boats and car ferries constantly shuttling between Split and the Islands. There were so many people with suitcases who must of arrived in Split and were heading off to other destinations.

At this point we decided to head home for the afternoon and let the kids play in the pool for the rest of the day.
