Split, Croatia – Omis and the Giant Inflatables

After a busy drive day to Krka we wanted to stay local and spend some time on the beaches. Ever since we had arrived in Croatia Izzy had been wanting to go to a waterpark and we learned there was one in Omis, 15km away.

We set off early as we wanted to explore the town and find a Geo-cache aswell. Approaching Omis, the traffic was horrendous. We just sat stationary on the road. In the end, we pulled off and found a huge carpark, translated the parking sign using google translate and realised we could park up for the day for about £8.

As it happened we were only a 5 minute walk along the river to the town centre. From here Omis looked beautiful – blue water with a backdrop of mountains.

Walking into Omis

When we reached the main road we realised the traffic hadn’t been moving as the town was gridlocked. A traffic warden had been brought out to try and get the cars moving through the town.

The main road through Omis didn’t look particularly special – a few market stalls, supermarkets and ice cream shops. We were a bit puzzled why it had such glowing reviews, then we walked down one of the side streets……Omis is a labyrinth of small cobbled streets full of restaurants, houses and shops. It was so pretty.

There was a Fort you could climb to – we climbed as far as the entrance but as lunchtime was approaching we didn’t go in and settled for finding a Geo-cache nearby instead!

Near the Fort entrance

We found a lovely restaurant for lunch. They served lots of meat platters so we got one to share with the largest soft drinks in the world! Tom asked for lemonade – not realising it was fresh lemonade which he got to add his own sugar to which he loved. The rest of us just had diet cokes.

Lunchtime

The platter was amazing. It had chicken, beef kebabs, pork skewers, steak, tomato rice and vegetables. Both kids loved the steak. It came with sour cream and a red sauce which we found out was ajvar, a red pepper relish.

Lunch in Omis

After lunch it was time to head to the beach and the giant inflatable water park. Stu and I decided against going on as we could just watch the kids from the beach. It was quite a way out to sea so took about 10 minutes to wade out to it. The sea wasn’t deep until about 10 metres from the water park and then you couldn’t touch the floor.

Stu and I took it in turns to go check on them but they were fine – although exhausted after 90 mins of playing. We promised we’d take them to another one before we left Croatia.
