Mallaig, Scotland – Drive from Mallaig to Fort William

After our week in Skye we boarded an early morning ferry from Armadale, Skye to Mallaig, Scotland. We wanted to take the car ferry as we had used the Skye Bridge on our journey to Skye. We had an amazing crossing – the sea was so still and the scenery was beautiful.

Silver Sands of Morar

We had a 9 hour drive home back to Gloucester but we wanted to break up the journey and do some stops on route so we began by going to the Silver Sands of Morar – a beach just outside Mallaig. It was a lovely quiet beach so we had a short stroll before carrying on with our journey.

Camusdarach Beach

Just five minutes down the road we came to Camusdarach beach. We had to walk through quite an overgrown path to reach the beach but it was worth it. Again we had the entire beach to ourselves and Izzy built a sand fort and then Tom & Izzy both played on the rocks.

Loch Shiel and Glenfinnan

We were aware time was ticking by so headed off to our next stop – Loch Shiel and the Glenfinnan Viaduct. Loch Shiel was the setting for part of the Triwizard Tournament in Harry Potter and the Goblet of fire. On the side of the loch is the Glenfinnan Monument which was boarded up last time we visited. We wandered down to the loch and the kids played for a bit but we didn’t go up the monument.

We then moved car parks to the Glenfinnan Viaduct viewpoint. The Glenfinnan Viaduct is also featured in some of the Harry Potter films. We took some photos but unfortunately hadn’t timed our visit in order to see the train cross the bridge!

We had one more stop planned – a hike to Steal Falls – so we carried on our journey to Fort William.
