Vintgar Gorge, Slovenia

Having spent 3 nights in Rakitna exploring the caves and castles it was time to move to our next destination – Lake Bled – where we were staying for 4 nights. It was only 2 hours away but we couldn’t check in to our house until 4pm so we needed a stop off point as we didn’t want to waste the day. We saw that there was a gorge walk – Vintgar – near to Lake Bled so decided that would take up a few hours.

It was really hard to find the Gorge as some of the roads had been closed meaning the car park nearest to the entrance was also closed. There were various options of using a train from Bled or a bus from a nearby town but after driving in circles and trying to follow the instructions on their website we parked in a town – Blejska Dobrava – which was a 40 minute walk from the gorge entrance. This worked quite well as we hadn’t realised the gorge was one way so we could walk through a wood to get to the entrance and then when we came back out of the gorge we were close to the car.

The walk to the gorge was quite nice – we were on a path high up above the river which flowed through the Vintgar Gorge. You could hear it but not see it.

The path eventually descended to the river and we entered the gorge. There were loads of bridges and wooden walkways which were attached to the rock walls. In places the river was really blue.

At one point we were walking under some rocks and Izzy spotted a huge spider which she thought ended up in her hair – it didn’t!

Towards the end of the walk the scenery got more dramatic!

When we finished the gorge part of the walk the river opened up into a more woodland area and to exit we had to climb quite a few steps to get back to the road to take us to the car park. We really enjoyed visiting the gorge.

When walking back to the car we the thought the area reminded us of the Swiss Alps as we were walking through fields with mountains in the background.

We still had some time before we could check into the house so decided to go to a supermarket and pick up supplies. It should only have taken us 10 minutes to get to Lake Bled. However, we followed google maps and after 5 minutes had to turn around as the roads were closed and had to head all the way back to the motorway and go the long way round. We still had time to go shopping and eventually arrived at our home during a massive thunderstorm!

I had booked us an apartment over looking Lake Bled – chose it solely for the views. It was up on one of the hills 5 minutes out of the town.
