It was our final full day in Iceland and we woke up to another absolutely beautiful morning. Fresh snow on the ground and a lovely sunrise – we had really been spoilt by the weather this week – especially as the forecast at the start of the week was not good!

Another beautiful morning in Iceland
Kerid Crater
Our first stop of the day was Kerid Crater – mainly because Stu really wanted to visit again. Kerid crater is over 6500 years old and is over 50 meters deep. We had previously visited in the summer where we were able to walk to the bottom and have a picnic by the turquoise water – however, it was completely different covered in snow.

Kerid Crater
We walked part of the way around the crater and did contemplate following the path down to the bottom but it was very icy so decided to give it a miss! We also had tickets to the Secret Lagoon and an afternoon restaurant booking so needed to move on.
The Secret Lagoon
The Secret Lagoon is the oldest natural pool in Iceland and after really enjoying the Sky Lagoon we wanted to visit some other thermal baths.

The Secret Lagoon
It was much more rustic than the Sky Lagoon and the changing rooms were not as plush. However – we still really enjoyed our time here. The biggest difference was whilst at the Sky Lagoon you enter the water from inside the changing rooms so you don’t feel the cold, here you entered outside! Although once in the water it is lovely and warm.

We spent almost 2 at the lagoon before heading off for lunch.
Friðheimar
I had been able to get a last minute lunch reservation at Friðheimar – the Tomato restaurant. Friðheimar grows tomatoes all year round (even in the dark winters) using special greenhouses. The restaurant is situated in one of the greenhouses and the menu is based on tomatoes. We were a little bit early for our booking so we explored the outside area and visited their horses.

Arriving at Friðheimar

Stu, Tom & Izzy ordered the tomato soup whilst I opted for the tomato pasta. The food was really good. Tom then chose to have green tomato and apple pie for pudding which arrived in a very cute plant pot!

Lunch at Friðheimar
We really enjoyed our lunch at Friðheimar – it wasn’t cheap but it was such a good experience. As we left Tom and Izzy ended up snow fighting – which resulted in Izzy being pushed into a pile of snow!

Friðheimar
Unfortunately we had to head back to Hella and get packed up as we were flying home the next day. We really enjoyed our week in Iceland. We normally don’t return to the same place but experiencing Iceland in winter was a complete contract to our summer holiday there a few years earlier.
